The important role Bill of Lading plays in international trade as a proof of goods have been carried on a ship as a document of title to those goods and as a form of security.

A bills of lading has three main functions:

• Receipt of cargo
• Evidence of a contract governing terms and conditions of carriage
• Document of title to the cargo
